** As we wind down to the final days of this difficult year, OGTV is tipping our hat to all of the essential workers on the front lines with this uplifting story about a New Jersey man who has found a way to do this difficult job for years, even without his eyesight! **
The flickering neon sign reflects eerily off the aging, chrome exterior; a long smooth marble counter with spinning stools draws your gaze left and right as you enter; the checkered linoleum floor seeps under the rows of back-to-back leather booths enveloped by the rain streaked wrap-around windows. You may think you've entered a typical American roadside eatery, but your experience here will be anything but ordinary.
You have just stepped into the Bendix Diner, a staple in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey since the 1940's. It's no surprise that The Bendix can serve up a sizzling Burger with deep fried onion rings and a frothy chocolate shake. What is unique about this meal is the waiter who delivers it to your table – his name is John Diakakis, and he is blind.
John was born with Retinitis Pigmentosa. RP is a rare genetic disorder that involves the breakdown and loss of cells in the retina. John could still see shadows in his early teens while working in his parents' restaurant in New York City, but his condition was deteriorating steadily. Despite the hardship, John was an excellent student and Senior Class President at North Rockland High School. John continued his studies at Ithaca College where he studied Psychology and Business and had a great experience." It was a lot of fun," he recalled. "Being around so many diverse people and different personalities made the best [of me] come out."
After college, John felt the urge to return to the family business and worked alongside his brother, mother and dad, but as he aged, things became darker, the shadows vanished, and by the time he turned 30 he was completely blind. This was also a turbulent time of highs and lows during which John met the woman he would marry while at the same time his father passed away, increasing his responsibilities at The Bendix.
Dedicating himself to his family and his work, John took over a lead role at the diner while he and his wife raised three boys. The oldest, Tony, who was recently accepted to Harvard University, has worked with his parents over the years and has watched his Dad cope with his condition with positivity and hard work.. "Noticing my Dad's lack of fear when faced with his daily challenges provided a blue print for me that I applied to my own life," he reflected. "He's never been afraid to try new things and has been a great leader."
The Bendix may seem like a time capsule from years gone by, but it continues to thrive. Meet the hard working family that keeps its spirit alive and the blind waiter that helps you see what it means to live a meaningful life.

What would be a unique way to honor the service of 400 hungry sailors and their families for the holidays? You contact Chef Plum, have him round up his crew of top flight chefs and grill masters, bring in enough food to feed…well…the Navy, spice it up with a dash of top flight entertainment, and you have all of the ingredients for a memorable evening of food, love, and family!
This unique gathering is at the heart of this first episode of a new OnlyGood TV Series, Random Acts of Cooking. This series follows Chef Plum, an inspired chef who looks to spread the message of kindness and community through the power of food. In this debut episode, his team of chefs prepare and cook a special holiday meal at the US Navy Base in New London, Connecticut, while also teaching some of the sailors how to cook and use special techniques in the base galley.
"The universal language of happiness is food," Chef Plum explains. "That's what Random Acts of Cooking is - using that power to help other people and do something amazing with it."
Chief Petty Officer Jeremy Flake knows that being on active duty on a navy base, away from home, can be difficult for the sailors during the holidays. This event was a chance for the base community to share a wonderful meal as well as a special musical performance by American Idol 2015 winner Nick Fradiani. "To see all of the families come in, not just the sailors, it brings us together and today, makes us all whole," he said warmly.
Chef Plum uses his master culinary skills and his big heart to change people's lives using the connection that can only be achieved by sitting down around a table and sharing a meal with others. Watch his team go above and beyond to make this a night to remember for all of the sailors and their families.

Do you ever wonder what a day in the life of a therapy dog is like? In the OGTV Original Series "Sullivan's Travels," a golden retriever therapy dog named Sullivan Travolta takes us along with her as she assists folks in all kinds of settings. Having been trained at Project Chance in Jacksonville, Florida, Sullivan provides support and happiness to kids and adults in schools, nursing homes, classes, and any other program where she's needed.
In this episode of "Sullivan's Travels", our hero pup joins her dad at work, at a film workshop called Inclusion Films, where he's training a group of adults with disabilities in filmmaking. The group in this workshop is making a holiday film about giving gifts to families in need and since the theme is Christmas, Sullivan not only attends classes in lighting and post-production, she also gets to tag along as the crew picks out a Christmas tree for the movie. Sullivan helps with the lighting, props, and especially lunch!
Get an insider's look at how movies are made, and let Sullivan put a smile on your face.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

** We love this story that celebrates a warm and dedicated member of the US Postal Service who makes the holiday special for kids waiting for a letter from Santa. **
Thousands of children each year send their wishes to Santa. Where do the letters really go? Do they get answered? Did you know there is a Chief Elf at the United States Post Office who help makes children's holiday wishes come true?
Pete Fontana reports directly to Santa as Chief Elf. For the past 21 years he has overseen the 104-year-old Operation Santa Claus program in New York City. A dedicated group of 'postal elves' help Fontana open all letters to Santa that come through the NYC Post Office. They answer the letters of families in need to give back and make their Christmas wishes come true!
Sadly, Fontana retired, but he will have the stories, magic and memories to carry with him forever! Don't worry, there is a new Chief Elf, Gail Branham, who will be keeping the magic alive.
This video was produced by Tracy Chevrier and shot/edited by Mark Belden.
