This Florida Teacher's Easter Surprise Contains a Special Lesson About Kindness
Brent Walker is a elementary-school teacher in Tampa, Florida, who likes to teach beyond the curriculum, introducing his students to important life lessons and values like kindness, motivation, and cooperation. And on the occasion of Easter, Brent found a way to bring a lesson to life—with the help of his social media network.
In Brent's classroom, he emphasizes kindness and likes to remind his students that humans are all connected; that people care for his students who don't even know them. This is kind of a heady subject, and Brent knew that a good number of his kids didn't really buy it. But after they got a big Easter surprise, we bet that many of the doubters' minds were changed!
It all started with a trip to Walmart, where Brent spotted some great pre-made Easter baskets. He says he immediately wanted to get each of his students a basket, but at $10 each, they were beyond his budget. So Brent made a Facebook post, inviting his friends to "sponsor" a student's basket by making a small donation.
Within an hour, Brent had received $700. Most of the money came in $5 and $10 increments, which goes to show how many people participated.
"I keep telling them," Brent says of his students, "'There are people all over the world that you don't even know who are giving money to help you succeed... And so this is a great example of that."
That's a lesson worth remembering!
