This Community Comes Together In A Beautiful Way To Honor Fallen Soldiers
As the fourth of July approaches, people across America are already celebrating by lighting small fireworks and commemorating all of the soldiers that served or gave their lives to keep this country both safe and free. Dr. Alida Ward, Reverend of the Greenfield Hill Church in Connecticut, brings her community together to honor all of the fallen soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan by holding a memorial service in her church and posting the names of all those who have passed on her church walls. Despite this, they felt like something more needed to be done.
In 2009, Alida's church started the "Field of Flags" project and has continued to do it every 2 years. Since then tons of community members have visited the field to sit down, pray, or reflect. "It is a powerful witness," she says. The Field of Flags reminds the community of how many have sacrificed their lives and it brings out the gratitude for those who have sacrificed, and the sorrow for those who have been lost.
Today, this exhibit displays nearly 7,000 flags - one dedicated to each soldier. The flags represent gratitude, sorrow, peace, and hope. The flags were originally left out for July 4th weekend to revitalize the community's patriotic spirit, but now they're left out for 3 weeks and everyone is welcome to visit and pay their respects.
"It is our way to mourn and never forget those who have given so much," said Ward. "It's almost inevitable to find yourself praying for peace in our world…".
Those that look across this impressive display will surely have similar feelings with the hope that we can continue to fight for what's right and that in due time, peace will come. The Greenfield Hill Church is leading by example, and it's one that we should all follow.
