The Inspiring Amy Van Dyken Swims Again!
In the past year, since her accident, Amy has come so incredibly far. She was left paralyzed from the waist down but that doesn't stop her. She participates in physical therapy 3 times a week and doesn't stop fighting!
She announced recently that she had reflexes in her legs which his huge! She can also walk with the help of an exoskeleton. But what about swimming? The Olympic swimmer thought she'd never find herself in the water again. But just like everything else in Amy's recovery, she didn't give up.
"I really hadn't swum for a year,'' she said. "I had tried it. Did not like it. That was when I felt the most paralyzed I've ever felt. I could do anything I wanted to do in the water, and I can't really do that any more. So literally a few days ago [my dog Kuma] jumped in the water, and I looked at [my husband] Tom and I said, 'All right. I'm gonna try it.''
Amy got back in the water and swam! We couldn't be more proud of you, Amy. She isn't sure if she will ever walk again... and no one has those answers. But she isn't going to stop trying.
She is such an incredible source of motivation to us all. Never stop fighting. Make the most out of your life while you're here!
