Teaching At-Risk Kids to Love Cooking - Sprouts Cooking Club

** Our final OGTV GOOD STORY of the week is all about some generous chefs from the San Francisco Bay area who are giving some at-risk kids a taste of a what a career in the restaurant business could be like. **

Sprouts Cooking Club is an organization that empowers youth of all socioeconomic backgrounds to eat and live sustainably by teaching them how to cook healthy meals for themselves and their families.

A specific program that Sprouts offers is called the Chef-In-Training Program. This FREE program offers young adults ages 18-24 from underserved communities the opportunity to train under an executive chef from a local restaurant in the Bay Area. For six months, they participate in this paid apprenticeship and learn everything there is to know in order to acquire a job in the restaurant industry. They complete their apprenticeship in the same restaurant under the tutelage of the same executive chef for the duration of the six months.

One home of the Chef-In-Training program is Gibson-- a beautiful restaurant attached to the Hotel Bijou in Downtown San Francisco. Adam Chapman, the director at Gibson and a new participant in the Chef-in-Training program, sees great opportunities to learn for those involved in the program. "If somebody wants to work in the restaurant business, whether in the kitchen or the front of the house, they will learn everything that it takes on all levels."

Karen Rogers, the founder of this non-profit, started Sprouts to help guide kids to a future they might never have considered. In addition to the Chef-in-Training initiative, they offer several others, including an after school program where chefs come into the schools to work hands-on with the kids. There is also a camp which is run during school breaks where kids go to farms and restaurants where they are learning about food preparation and cooking within the community.

There is no denying the results."72% of all of our applicants have landed a job in the industry immediately after their internship," Karen reports. "We're really excited about this."

Sprouts is changing lives, particularly for at-risk youth. Kids who participate are now seeing a path to a career where they can make a good living and take it anywhere they want to go.

The Art of Fishing

** OGTV commemorates National Go Fishing Day with this story about a commercial fisherman from Maine who also offers a dramatic and colorful perspective of his days at sea from behind the lens. **

For Joel Woods, fishing and photography are the perfect pair. Joel uses photography to highlight his daily trips at sea as a peephole into the art of fishing.

By taking photographs of his crew and all they encountered out on the water, Joel felt he was giving his role of fisherman some relevance His images range from what's being caught, the process of catching these sea creatures, the sun sets, the splashing of waves and much more. He strives to create some insight about the beauty of fishing despite the tediousness and repetitiveness of it.

Hungry Harvest is Rescuing Ugly Produce To Feed The Needy

** OGTV encourages everyone to get involved in National Eat Your Vegetables Day, even if the produce doesn't look perfect. After all it's all in the flavor! **

Every year 20 billion pounds of produce goes to waste, never leaving the farm, based on appearance. Too big, too small, misshapen, whatever the reason, healthy, edible food is left to rot while millions go hungry. Hungry Harvest is an organization that aims to reduce food waste while getting quality produce to those in need.

The CEO and Co-Founder Evan Lutz started this company while still in college. He had the brainstorm that he could solve two problems at once by using one to solve the other. "I started a project that used one farmer's surplus produce to sell to college students at the University of Maryland," he explained. "I set up a farm stand in the basement of a dorm. After 6 months, 500 customers were coming to our stand every week. That's when I knew this idea could really take off."

After seeing her godson spend some time in the hospital, surrounded by kids who were having their birthdays without the laughter and joy that comes with their special day, Stefanie Grimm had an idea. Even if you are hospitalized, there is no reason that you shouldn't have a birthday party! This generous thought was the seed that grew into The Confetti Foundation.
