Teaching At-Risk Kids to Love Cooking - Sprouts Cooking Club

Sprouts Cooking Club is an organization that empowers youth of all socioeconomic backgrounds to eat and live sustainably by teaching them how to cook healthy meals for themselves and their families.

A specific program that Sprouts offers is called the Chef-In-Training Program. This FREE program offers young adults ages 18-24 from underserved communities the opportunity to train under an executive chef from a local restaurant in the Bay Area. For six months, they participate in this paid apprenticeship and learn everything there is to know in order to acquire a job in the restaurant industry. They complete their apprenticeship in the same restaurant under the tutelage of the same executive chef for the duration of the six months.

One home of the Chef-In-Training program is Gibson-- a beautiful restaurant attached to the Hotel Bijou in Downtown San Francisco. Adam Chapman, the director at Gibson and a new participant in the Chef-in-Training program, sees great opportunities to learn for those involved in the program. "If somebody wants to work in the restaurant business, whether in the kitchen or the front of the house, they will learn everything that it takes on all levels."

Karen Rogers, the founder of this non-profit, started Sprouts to help guide kids to a future they might never have considered. In addition to the Chef-in-Training initiative, they offer several others, including an after school program where chefs come into the schools to work hands-on with the kids. There is also a camp which is run during school breaks where kids go to farms and restaurants where they are learning about food preparation and cooking within the community.

There is no denying the results."72% of all of our applicants have landed a job in the industry immediately after their internship," Karen reports. "We're really excited about this."

Sprouts is changing lives, particularly for at-risk youth. Kids who participate are now seeing a path to a career where they can make a good living and take it anywhere they want to go.

Farm Becomes Sanctuary for Animals After Tragedy

The impetus for the creation of the Ima Survivor Animal Sanctuary was the awful week in August 2017 when Hurricane Harvey meandered about southeast Texas unleashing biblical amounts of rain and wreaking havoc on the people and animals who lived there. The survival of a donkey named Ima Jean from 6 foot flood waters, her struggle to live and the fight to survive by her and the other animals from Lester Morrow's ranch is the inspiration for this unique habitat.

Using Music and Art to Build Friendships on the Border

In a small, brightly decorated building only a stone's throw from the border wall between Mexico and the USA, 50 to 100 children a week come to do hands-on art projects, learn a musical instrument, or just socialize with others. In this special place, Director Gretchen Baer's mission is to show kids that anything is possible if you think creatively, no matter who you are or where you came from.

Nonprofit Studio Mariposa is a free transformative art center for kids in Naco, Mexico, along the Arizona border. For the past three years, kids come to the small studio once a week where Gretchen and her volunteers set up art projects and music lessons. The art projects include painting, making bracelets, mosaics and weaving on a loom.

This could be one of our favorite "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" stories…. literally.

Back in 1999, Saranne Rothberg, a New York City actor, received a cancer diagnosis and began a difficult regimen of therapy. Rather than being dragged down by sadness, Saranne tapped into the healing powers of humor. Once she began feeling better, she realized it could work for others, too, and the idea for Comedy Cures was born.
