Snack Attack
My favorite snack from yesteryear (and today!) are SweetTarts (kind of like my personality) and SnoCaps and Fireballs (again, also my personality!). Amanda has her favorites, and tells us about them, below -- what are yours?
As a 24-year-old, I still find myself chowing down on fruit snacks for a way to satisfy an afternoon craving, which got my stomach grumbling about some of the favorite snacks that I enjoyed growing up, Dunkaroos just being one of them. But what about the snacks of the past few decades? And when did some of these American staples first hit shelves? Let's take a quick trip back to reminisce (and maybe even drool) over snacks of days passed.
In 1950, American began runnin' on Dunkin’... Dunkin’ Doughnuts that is. My favorite strawberry-frosted doughnuts with sprinkles come from this fun coffee chain.
The perfect combination of a peanut and chocolate comes in the form of Hershey’s Peanut M&Ms! That’s right, in 1954, a go-to candy started showing up on shelves.
Tang, it’s a kick in the glass! Remember that? That powdery, neon orange drink came out in 1965 to quench every kid’s (and even astronauts'!) thirst!
In 1968, the stackable chip that can be used to make a duck face was released in the U.S. Yup, Pringles! Because once you pop, the fun don’t stop!
And since the summer heat seems to have arrived in full force, depending on where you live, how about cooling off with an ice cold pint of Ben & Jerry’s? This ice cream with a variety of fun flavor combinations first came out in 1978.
Just ten years later, my favorite sweet, dipping snack arrived: Dunkaroos! Unfortunately, this fabulous snack, first born in 1988, is not easily accessible. I even looked it up on Amazon, and some were selling the snack for $62! Sorry, but that’s a little out of my budget for a snack!
Another snack no longer available? Hershey’s Cookies ‘n’ Mint bars! Released in the early 1990s, this twist on the classic Hershey bar combined mint-flavored chocolate with bit of chocolate cookie. I certainly miss that one!
I have to admit that it makes me a little sad that some of my favorites from the past few decades no longer exist, but at the same time, others are still going strong! What are some of your favorite snacks, then and now? Share with me in the comments below!
