Showers On Wheels To Help The Homeless
Lava Mae is an organization created to help turn city buses into shower stations for the homeless. Doniece Sandoval started this project in response to meeting one of the nearly 6,500 homeless people living in San Francisco. Sandoval said, “One day I passed a woman in the street and she was very dirty and basically crying, and I heard her say that she would never be clean. There’s obviously a lot of layers to that but I was wondering what her opportunities were to actually get clean.”
Sandoval ditched her marketing career to start this project and has the support of both The Public Utilities Commission and The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. Each bus is expected to have two shower stations. By 2015 they will be able to provide 2000 showers per week. Lava Mae is currently $80,000 dollars short of it's first years budget. The project currently has a fiscal sponsorship but hopes to apply for its own nonprofit status next year.
