Meet the Emotional-Support Dog Who Stole the Show at the Boston Marathon
There were lots of emotions coursing through Boston during the running of the Marathon on Monday, April 16. Excitement and anticipation, of course, for the formidable race to come. Nervous and somber feelings, from reflecting on the attack on the Marathon five years prior. And perhaps a bit of fear of the elements; the runners were facing quite cold and wet weather. Given the heightened emotions, perhaps it was only natural that an emotional-support dog would show up and steal the show.
Meet Spencer and Penny, two specially trained golden retrievers (who are uncle and niece to one another) from the Boston area. Spencer's dad, Rich Powers, has brought the pup to cheer on the Boston Marathon runners for the last several years; thanks to Spencer's unique training, he is an expert at sitting and holding items in his mouth, as you can see in the video that Rich shared below!
"He likes to carry stuff," Rich said. "He carries a Frisbee every single day for miles... He always has something."
Despite the wind, rain, and cold, Spencer stayed strong for the runners. He certainly would have raised our spirits!
