Keeping Your Cool

I live up in the treetops so it's easy for me to keep my cool in the summer, but if you're human (you probably are if you're reading my blog), you might want to take note of some of Amanda's tips during these last dog days of summer!

With these hot summer days turning into hot summer nights, I find my mood to be reflected by how uncomfortably hot it can get. You know the Snickers commercials where the normally very manly men turn into drama queens or divas? Well, that can be how cranky I get when the heat seems to be insurmountable. I have to admit that I’ll take the heat over the cold any day; however, sometimes that humidity just gets under my skin.

Some days, I simply don’t want to leave the comforts of my air conditioned office. So when thinking about how to keep mentally happy and physically cool, I’ve been doing some different things to stay sane during these summer months.

Iced coffee

What better way to start your day when it’s already creeping above 90 degrees than to buy an iced coffee? But in a way to be more cost effective, I’ve begun making my own iced coffee. I usually brew the pot the night before so that’s it cool for when I wake up the next morning. Just add your sugar, creamer, and of course ice to enjoy!

Smoothies

When it’s so hot out that you don’t have the energy to put food in your body, I opt for a smoothie. If I hit up our local smoothie shop (Robek’s), I pick something with lots of fruit and have them add protein. Or if I make mine at home, I add a handful of spinach to give me those extra vitamins, minerals, and iron. Don’t worry, you can’t taste the spinach!

Pool, Lake, or Ocean Swimming

I forget that not everyone in the country doesn’t live five minutes from an ocean beach, but I’m not sure you could count Long Island Sound as ocean. Hey, at least it’s a salty body of water. One of my favorite happy activities during the summer is baking in that heat followed by a dip in the water.

Cold Showers

As some of you know, I’m an avid runner (currently training for my first marathon in the fall), and after pounding the pavement in the heat, I love cooling off in a cold shower. When it’s late at night, I would love to be hopping in a pool or lake to lower my body temperature, but that just won’t happen, so shower it is!

What are you tips and tricks to keep your cool during the summer? Are there any that I’m missing that you can’t live without?

** OGTV would like to take a moment to commemorate National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day with this story about the unstoppable Ernie Andrus, a WWII veteran who is still on his latest Coast2Coast run doing his part to keep the memory of his comrades alive. **

Ernie Andrus, now in his 90's, is running cross-country to raise money in order to put the LST 325, the ship he served on in the Navy during WWII, back on the beach in Normandy where it supported the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944.

This LST 325 is the only LST ship left (out of 1,051 made) that has been fully restored and still operational. Plans were initially made for a D-Day memorial service in 2014 for the ship, but it was canceled because of a shortage of finances. This inspired Ernie to start a project called, Coast2Coast Runs to raise money to honor his old ship.
