Evaluate Your Life and Get Happy!

Today's a day dedicated to you and your life. Me? Yes, you! Today is National Evaluate Your Life Day (really!) and your friends here at HooplaHa are encouraging you to take a look inside yourself to do a little evaluating. As “living life with a smile” enthusiasts, we know how easy it is to make some changes to be happier. And in honor of “Evaluate Your Life,” we’re going to share some scientific findings on how to be happier.

1.  You might be only half as happy as you could be.  Dig deep and try to be twice as happy as you are right now: Amazingly, we control about 50% of our happiness, meaning 50% is genetic and/or environmental, while the other 50% is up to us! (Source)

2. Be female!  : )  Women are generally happier than men. (Source)

3. Look around.  Find something beautiful!  Those who said they regularly took notice of something beautiful were 12 percent more likely to say they were satisfied with their lives. (Source)

4.  Move to Mexico!  ; )   In April 2009, Monterrey, Mexico was considered the happiest place in North America. (Source)

 And according to a story on Yes Magazine.org, here are ten more ways that have been proven to improve your life and really be happier.

1. Smile!

Like the quote from the movie Elf, “I just like to smile. Smiling’s my favorite.” We definitely agree with this one.

2. Have Goals

Working towards a goal, and even accomplishing that goal, is a great way to motivate yourself to be a better you.

3. Take Initiative

Along with having a goal, actually acting on that goal makes sure you putting in the effort to work towards something, even if it’s as simple as smiling more often.

4. Make Friends

We’re not saying you need to run out and make as many new friends as possible, but sometimes improving a relationship you’ve already begun or even being friendly to a co-worker could make the difference for you.

5. Devalue Money

The age-old saying that “money doesn’t buy happiness” is true. For those who are in a comfortable living style, having more money won’t change how happy they are with themselves.

6. Say Thank You

You’d be surprised how huge a role gratitude plays in your happiness, but also the happiness of those you tell that you appreciate. Try it!

7. Avoid Comparisons

We all do it. He has a better job. She has a better purse. He has a nicer car. She has the perfect life. The grass always seems greener on the other side, but you never know what their life is actually like. To stay away from the pain you cause yourself with comparisons, steer clear of them.

8. Exercise

For any of you chick-flick fans, the quote from Legally Blonde makes the perfect argument for exercise and happiness: “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands, they just don't.”

9. Give Away

Purge your life of things that you rarely use or don’t need. “One man's trash is another man's treasure.” You never know what an old sweater of yours would mean to someone who sees it as new.

10. Savor the Everyday

If today was your last day, what would you do? It may be a little unrealistic to live every day to the extreme of it being your very last day on earth, but you can appreciate the little things more or even be a little kinder to those you love.

Although some of these are much simpler than others, maybe if you just choose one of each of these for the next 10 days, you might see a tiny bit of a difference in your happiness. And if you’re already living life with a smile, we’re so proud of you!

Teacher Saves Program and Keeps Musical Dreams Alive

Several years ago the students at Rauner College Prep in Chicago, IL, received some bad news - they were told that the schools only music teacher was leaving. For the 350 students in the program, that looked like it would mean the end of their music education.
