Elderly Man's Roof Gets Fixed Thanks To Neighbors On Facebook
When neighbors come together, beautiful things can happen. What is the point of having neighbors if you can't find a friend or helper in them? I am fortunate to live in a neighborhood filled with wonderful people. This seems the same for 75-year-old Richard Dubiel.
Richard is used to doing things by himself. He isn't one to ask for help. So when his roof needed to be repaired he tried to fix it himself. Over a couple months, his neighbor, David Perez saw the dedicated man tirelessly fixed his roof. David feared for Richard's safety, given his age.
David took to Facebook and asked anyone with roofing experience to donate their time to help repair his neighbor's roof. Overwhelmed, the post got shared over 1,400 times.
"I'm trying to reach anyone that has roofing experience. ... I have a neighbor ... He is about 80 years old and climbs onto the roof trying to finish putting the shingles on by himself," Perez wrote in his post. "I would like to see if anyone can donate their time to help him finish."
About 15 people showed up to help and with Richard's permission the roof got finished. Even many others without roofing experience volunteered in other ways, like donating food and drinks to the crew.
"I was astonished," Dubiel told ABC News of the group's kind gesture. "I was so surprised and delighted because I was not expecting such a response."
