Baby Elephants Enjoying A Pool Party At The Zoo Is Pure Joy
Summer time is pool time, whether you're a city kid, a suburbanite, or a baby elephant in Dublin. As this smile-inducing video demonstrates, when temperatures soar, zoo keepers take extra steps to offer the animals they care for relief from the blazing sun.
As one Dublin Zoo spokesperson explained: "The animal care team at Dublin Zoo take some extra measures to ensure animals are kept comfortable and protected in times of very warm weather."
One method to cool off the over-heated animals is the tried-and-true "backyard sprinkler" system that so many of us humans enjoyed as kids. With high-volume hoses, zoo keepers create what looks like the world's wildest outdoor shower for the adult and baby elephants to frolic in. After they get a layer of water over their bodies, the smart elephants will then spray themselves with a layer of sand, creating a protective layer between their skin and the sun's rays.
Of course, no summer cool-down would be complete without some ice-cold treats.
"Keepers will freeze fruit, vegetables, and other food items into ice cubes and give these to the animals," said the zoo spokesperson, "as a way of keeping them hydrated. These are given to the large cats, primates and tapirs."
Stay cool, everyone!
