Groovy Projects Promotes Anti- Bullying With Music Education
** What better way to celebrate World Teacher's Day than with this OGTV original story about a brilliant teacher who is using music and performance to help elementary school students combat bullying. **
When you're a kid, the pressure to fit in can feel insurmountable. The situation is made worse when a kids witness an episode of peer bullying and feel confused about how to handle it. That's why New York City actor, musician and substitute teacher, Nate Lombardi founded Groovy Projects, an educational initiative incorporating music, rap and performance to empower elementary school students to combat bullying by showing them positivity can be current and cool.
Nate has shaped the lives of kids all over the country, using music and performance to not only connect them to their studies, but to connect them to each other.
"I hope to make this a nation-wide initiative," he said. "If there were more ambassadors like me, we could reach out to and help more kids."
Teachers and students who have been a part of the program has been noticing the positive effects of the program. Kids who sometimes cannot focus or excel in regular classes seem to shine when they are in more non-traditional, humanities based settings, said one teacher. She believes that music and the arts are important to student growth, liven up the classroom, and help them think in more creative ways.
"Artistic projects are really important," Alex, one student in the program told us. "It takes you away form being an average person and shows your special talent. It proves to you that you are unique."
