Amy Van Dyken Walks Again; Gives Most Inspirational Speech
Since Amy Van Dyken was left paralyzed after an ATV crash, she has spoken out many times about her struggles and progress. The six-time Olympic gold medalist continues to inspire us. She gave her most moving speech to date at the 2015 espnW: Women's + Sports Summit.
"The other day I took 50 steps, and it was the hardest thing I've ever done," Amy said from her wheelchair on stage. She began with recounting the memory of her accident. She was told she'd never walk again. She was told she'd have zero feeling from her belly down. But Amy is not a person you tell what to do! The funny, heroic swimmer is defying all odds and has no plans on giving up. Her speech was funny, moving and incredibly inspirational.
My favorite quote was. "If you were told right now that tomorrow you were going to wake up and you would be paralyzed from the waist down -- would some of the things that seem like a really big deal right now, really be a big deal? Or would you call your husband, your wife, your partner. Your kids, your parents, and tell them that you love them?"
I love you, Amy and thank you for inspiring me to never give up! To watch the speech, click here!
