A California Community Gave This Wounded Veteran His Dream Wedding
The first time that Juan Dominguez was able to really use his new legs was when he walked down the aisle with Alexis, his brand-new bride.
Marine Corporal Dominguez lost both of his legs and one of his arms during a 2010 tour in Afghanistan, after he stepped on an IED that exploded right under him. He underwent about 24 surgeries, and endured a long period of rehab to regain his ability to move independently with his new limbs. Fortunately, Juan had great timing.
"This is the first time that I've been able to keep my legs on," said Juan when we spoke with him—on the day of his wedding!
Juan and Alexis first went out after Alexis decided to ask Juan out. The two friends had been dancing around the subject for some time, but Juan remembers that he was too nervous to ask Alexis on a date. Now, the two of them will be together forever.
"It seems so unreal," Alexis said when we talked with her.
A wedding day can feel surreal, but for Juan, there was never a question that he was going to get to marry the woman of his dreams.
"Did I ever think I was going to get to this point? Yes," he said. Even after his surgeries, "nothing has changed... My brain is still here and my heart is still here."
