All Summer, 13-Year-Old Tyler Has Been Raising Money To Save Unwanted Pets
"It kind of gives me a tingly feeling," says 13-year-old Tyler Shands. He's talking about his efforts to raise money to save animals in shelters from being euthanized before they find their forever homes. The animal lover in Tyler inspired the teenager to launch a project to collect recyclables, turn them in for cash, and donate all the money to shelters to help support the dogs and cats living there.
It all comes down to compassion, for Tyler.
"You know how a pound... when they have too many animals, that they put them down? I don't want animals to die," he explains.
And while Tyler started small, collecting cans and bottles from his neighborhood, the power of social media helped elevate his efforts, as people from farther away began donating recyclables to Tyler's project.
Recently, Tyler surprised a local shelter with $155 that he had raised. Calling his project Tyler's Kitties, the teenager plans to continue using his summer vacation to raise money to save dogs and cats in local shelters—and we applaud him for it!
