Above And Beyond: HooplaHa Teacher Of The Month

This is the first story out of a new HooplaHa series highlighting outstanding human beings. 'Above and Beyond' will highlight any person who is making the world a better place by not only doing their job, but going above and beyond what is expected of them. We are on the search for teachers, students, moms & dads, healthcare professionals, public service officials (police, fire, rescue), or anyone that stands out in their communities and leaves an everlasting affect and memory on everyone they serve. Do you know someone who is improving the world just by being in it? Marvin is going to kick off the series with the segment highlighting outstanding teachers once a month!

Being a teacher is a very important, tough and challenging (to say the very least) profession. They are shaping the lives of our future generations. Marvin Callahan is a first grade teacher who is improving the lives of his students every day.  Yes, he teaches him the basics- reading, writing and math. But what is even more important is that he looks out for their well being. As the person who spends the most time with them, it is vital that he takes an interest in their personal lives too. When Callahan started teaching 21 years ago,  he had no idea how many families were struggling to feed their children on a daily basis. The teacher has witnessed too many kids coming to school hungry. He went above and beyond his duties and started a community program that sends backpacks full of food home with students in need. The 'backpack program' has members of the community come together to send students home with food every Friday: two breakfasts, two lunches, and two dinners.  To help even further, every morning, he checks with his students to make sure they have eaten breakfast. If they have not, he sends them to the cafeteria with his own money. What a loving, caring, incredible man. He is teaching them the importance of compassion and love; and that is the most important lesson they will ever learn.

Stay tuned every week for stories about worthy people going above and beyond to make the world a better place.
