9 Pieces Of Advice For When You're Afraid To Try Something New
1. When you're not certain that new restaurant is going to be worth it.
-It's three hours of your time and you might find something you like. The benefit outweighs the risk.
2. When you're anxious about applying to a job you don't know is "right for you."
-The worst thing they will say is no. If you are lucky enough to get the job, but you wind up hating it, you are better off knowing what not to apply for in the future. Sometimes, finding where your heart truly lies means placing it first where it doesn't belong. This also applies to...
3. Going out with someone on a first date.
-You've heard this a million times: you're not marrying the guy, you're getting to know him. You don't have to kiss him, you don't have to hold his hand, you just have to listen to the words coming out of his mouth, while also listening to your heart and your gut.
4. Hiring a personal trainer who looks like he might be an Olympian hopeful/Demi God.
-As someone who nearly passed out after doing 20 squats IN FRONT OF a personal trainer, let me tell you it's not that bad. You don't have to commit to a year-long thing, just sample it out. You might learn something helpful that you can do on your own.
5. Getting a tattoo.
-Okay, this is a big deal because it's permanent. You can't remove a tattoo with a break-up text, or by canceling your contract, or absconding to Canada. Make it count. BUT, if people nag you over and over about how it's going to sag three inches toward the Earth by the time you're a hundred, remind them that everything on our bodies does that. Don't let how you're going to look at 104 scare you from how you want to look now.
6. Moving in with someone.
- You have every right to establish barriers. It isn't rude, and the right roommate will understand, even if it's your lover, best ffriend, fiancé or parole officer (or all of the above).

7. Relocating to a new city.
- Think of the people you know who have done this. Are they destitute? Deprived? Dead? Probably not. I knew a girl who moved from Mississippi to Massachusetts and lived in a car for a month. She is now happily employed and lives with close friends. After the ebb will come the flow.
8. Starting College.
- Are you sure you're not just excited? You're about to have a four-year-long sleepover with people your age. You'll experiment with relationships, perspectives, and there will likely be competent professors whose influence will change your life forever. Not to mention, when else are you going to attend a football game like this:
9. Finishing College.
- Newsflash: YOU NEVER LEFT THE REAL WORLD. Even when you were skipping your 8am labs, and smooching under the stars on an insanely well-kept football field. People still get cancer in college; people still fall in love in college; people still make huge mistakes and achieve incredible things in college. The scenery will change, the schedules will demand more time, but you are already prepared to be just fine.
