Young Texan’s Pecan Snack Business is Kid Made – Kid Owned

When Charlie Kobdish was just 10, he gathered his parents, Sonia and Chuck, in the kitchen of their East Dallas, Texas home and told them, "I want to start a business". Charlie was always coming up with new inventions or businesses, so his parents weren't shocked by his announcement. What did surprise them was the very specific idea he had come up with - "I want to be a Pecantrepreneur", he declared. Setting out to create his very own spiced pecan snack, Charlie's Treats was born.

With the help of his parents and sister Emme, they researched recipes, experimented with some flavors, cooked up a few batches and carefully packaged them for sale. Chuck was appointed as the chief sales guy and reached out with samples from the original batches to a few local groups he knew. When he sold 60 bags on his first try and got requests for 120 more, he knew Charlie was on to something.

"I started it because I wanted to have some business expertise for when I grow up and get a job," Charlie explained. "It's not just a hobby business. We are registered with the state, we have an LLC, and we have licenses for managing food."

Sonia, Chuck, and Emme make up his production line in the kitchen, filling and then carefully weighing each bag. In all, they have packaged and sold more than 1,000 bags of spiced pecans. Thanksgiving and Christmas have been the busiest time for this upstart business with five percent of the profits going to local charities.

Charlie works enthusiastically on his venture but still studies hard at school, plays baseball and basketball, and participates in the Boy Scouts. Watch and learn about his favorite flavors, his audition for Shark Tank, and how being the boss is shaping some strong ideas of what he will do in the future.
