Watch: Nigerian BMX Fan Gets Brand-New Bike From Facebook Friends
The power of social media to connect people across the world continues to amaze us. Recently, a new story about such surprise connections caught our attention, and we know it will put a huge smile on your face.
It starts with a young man named Cherechukwu Udenkwere (goes by Che), who lives in Nigeria. Che is an avid biker, in the BMX style, and he posted a video of himself doing tricks to social media, where some fellow BMX riders saw it—and noticed that Che's efforts were being limited by the state of his older bicycle.
One BMX fan who saw the video left a comment that would lead to something much bigger.
"Good riding mate. Keep at it," wrote Shane Hawke, "Wish we could all club together and send you some bits to improve your bike. Why don't we all start a donation page to help out?"
And guess what? The BMX community did just that. Riders and fans from across the world joined the effort, donating some parts and funds to buy others, until there was enough to send Che a shiny, new, jet-black BMW bicycle.
Mark Locke was among the BMX fans who participated in the new-bike effort, and he put together a mini-movie called "A Bike for Che," which captured the reaction of Che and his friends to getting the bike in the mail.
"I want to say a big thank you.... this is not what I was expecting," Che said. "God, the bike was awesome."
