Voluntourism: Vacationing with a Cause
Volunteer vacations or voluntourism is travel which includes volunteering for a charitable cause. Volunteer vacations participants are diverse but typically share a desire to “do something good” while also experiencing new places and challenges in locales they might not otherwise visit.
Ken Budd, author of "The Voluntourist", began searching for meaning in his own life after his father died of a sudden heart attack. He signed up for a volunteer trip in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and then traveled to Costa Rica to teach in English. Now years later, Ken has “voluntoured” in China, Palestine, Kenya, and Ecuador. Ken believes we live better when we live for others—even if it’s only two weeks at a time!
