Climbing Higher: Shanelle Gabriel's Story

** OGTV is highlighting Lupus Awareness Month with this story about a poet and Lupus survivor, Shanelle Gabriel, who is using her recovery as fuel to inspire her art. **

"Rock out...live your life....live your art!" This was Brooklyn, New York native Shanelle Gabriel's response to her diagnosis of Lupus, an autoimmune disease where your body's immune system, that usually fights infections, attacks healthy tissue instead.

Shanelle first noticed something was off when her fingers turned blue and hurt in the cold and she could not seem to shake the feeling of fatigue no matter how well she slept. After being diagnosed in 2004, Shanelle decided that her health would not be something that would limit her success.

WWII Vet Runs Cross Country to Save His D-Day Ship

** OGTV would like to take a moment to commemorate Armed Forces Day with a story about the unstoppable Ernie Andrus who is still on his latest Coast2Coast run doing his part to keep the memory of his comrades alive. **

Ernie Andrus, now in his 90's, is running cross-country to raise money in order to put the LST 325, the ship he served on in the Navy during WWII, back on the beach in Normandy where it supported the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944.

This LST 325 is the only LST ship left (out of 1,051 made) that has been fully restored and still operational. Plans were initially made for a D-Day memorial service in 2014 for the ship, but it was canceled because of a shortage of finances. This inspired Ernie to start a project called, Coast2Coast Runs to raise money to honor his old ship.

Now, a million thoughts are running through her head. "You feel this trepidation…and… like…wait…should I be doing this?" she recalled. "There's definitely a point where you forget you're naked. You have complete awareness and no awareness at all. You know that you are naked but you just don't care."
