Every year in the second week of May, we designate a specific day to honor our mothers, known as Mother's Day. With Mother's Day, we come to appreciate every little thing our mother's have done for us, whether that being those delicious meals she prepares for the family, or by doing your load of laundry when you didn't notice it. Either way, our moms have done a lot for us and this day helps us reflect on what they've done to get us where we currently are in our lives.

6 Things Nurses REALLY want you to know

Have you ever looked at the face of a nurse? They have many; they have a proud face on when they help a patient take their first steps post-op, or when their patients master their first flight of stairs after not wanting to getting out of bed that morning.
Nurses also have a face they desperately try to hide... the face for a patient that is in hospice care, the face they use to console a family, their panicked look when they see a patient's fever spike or oxygen saturation take a dramatic dip. Nurses are often the ones that will your hold your hand; they do everything in their power to make sure you're feeling better.
On May 6th, we celebrate the daily life-savers in the medical field: nurses. In 1993, the American Nurses Association declared May 6-12 as the national week to celebrate and elevate the nursing profession. Here are a couple of things you REALLY need to know about them.

National Firefighters Day!

Written by Paige Touse

Rescue Dog Jake Becomes A Firefighter youtu.be

In 1999, five firefighters were battling a wildfire in Australia when the wind changed direction and killed them. This was the story that inspired International Firefighters Day to be created.

May 4th is Saint Florian's day, the first suspected commanding firefighter of a Roman battalion thus becoming the patron saint of firefighters. International Firefighters Day is a day to celebrate and remember the past firefighters who have died in service, and those who are still fighting the fire. Individuals can show support and appreciation by wearing a blue and red ribbon— a symbolic representation of a firefighter's job. Red for fire and blue for water.

Firefighters fight for and rescue houses, communities, families, individuals, and dogs. Like Jake.

As a three-week-old puppy, Jake, pitbull mix, was rescued from a burning shed by firefighter Bill Lindler. He suffered several burn marks and needed to be brought to a local clinic for treatment. After not being able to contact Jake's owner, Bill took him in. Due to his treatment requiring several dozes of antibiotics a day, Bill began to Jake around the fire house.

"Even with all the burns, he was so happy and so friendly," says firefighter, James Durham, "It was just nice to have him around,".

Jake was quickly recognized as the official mascot and fire fighter of the Hanahan Fire Department by the Mayor. He even has his own bed at the station. Now, Jake visits schools to help teach students about fire safety and how to handle emergencies. Originally Bill wanted to train Jake to be therapy dog but is now training him to be an Arson Detection Dog.

Happy Earth Day!

by Mico Coluccio

Today on April 22nd marks the 49th anniversary of Earth Day! Each year, the Earth Day Network promotes positive ideas in an attempt to change our planet for the better.

Beginning in 1970, Earth Day's purpose gave light to the emerging decision to take action and protect the planet we call home. 20 millions Americans took action, protesting against the negative impacts to nature due to the Industrial Revolution. Since the first celebration of Earth Day, the cause and movement has grown to become a necessary step in environmental change.
