Trip Of A Lifetime: Aging Veterans Visit Their War Memorials
Wisconsin-based photographer Beth Skogen volunteered with VetsRoll to accompany 200 state veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials commemorating the wars they fought in. Her photo essay captures the emotional journey as the veterans, many who are frail and in their 80s and 90s, stop at memorials that pay tribute to their service.
VetsRoll is a non profit that provides annual free bus trips to Washington, DC to World War II, Korean Era War Veterans and "Rosie the Riveters" as a way to thank them for their service. The group recognizes the urgent need to help aging veterans make the trip, especially World War II veterans who are dying at an estimated rate of 1,000 per day.
