Young Readers Find Enchantment at This Unique Las Vegas Book Store
Hurry, hurry, please come to the back room—we don't have much time! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write an original book in the next two hours in order to save our bookstore from closure! And... go!
That's the set-up that school-aged visitors to workshops at the Writer's Block Book Shop are faced with. And it's all the brainchild of Scott Seeley, who brought his intricate and interactive store concept from New York to Las Vegas as part of a revitalization project called Downtown Project. At Writer's Block Book Shop, readers can wander through a number of rooms and spaces with unique and lush decorations that draw them into an imaginative mindset.
An imaginative mindset is a must-have during the Writer's Block workshop sessions for kids (which are free). Because that's when Scott introduces the kids to that fictional premise: that the store is desperately in need of new stories, and the workshop participants are to be the authors of those stories. Then the young writers sit down and compose and illustrate their own books! The only requirement is that the book be an original work; everything else is up to the author! Once the writing is finished, Writer's Block actually prints lightweight book versions of the stories that came out of the workshop—and the kids get to take them home!
We love the concept of these magical writing workshops! Field trip to Las Vegas, anyone...?
