This Head Custodian's Lunchtime Concerts Make The School Day Magical

"They're a good crowd. I haven't been booed yet," says Alo Key, a lifelong musician. The crowd that he's talking about is quite special: they're elementary school students at the school where Alo works as the head custodian. The setting for Alo's performances is also special, at once both humble and magical: the cafeteria at Three Trails Elementary School in Missouri.

The son of a musician, Alo says that his father "groomed" him and his siblings into talented singers and instrumentalists. Alo was even touring across the globe in a band for a while! He landed at Three Trails school when he decided to choose a more grounded, mellow life in order to spend more time with his wife and kids.

At the school, Alo is "a friend to all of us," according to fifth-grader Makayla Marshall.

His lunchtime concerts are just one part of Alo's contributions to making Three Trails school a welcoming and joyful place. As the reigning Employee of the Year, Alo is a constant presence in the halls, where he's known for giving out high-fives.

As fifth-grader Elijah Kenyon puts it, Alo is "like a part of my heart because I just love music and he's making my passion for music even bigger."

Rescue, Transform, Share: How an Ohio Soup Shack Is Saving Lives

"It really does take a village to help people," says Sandra Lettie, a volunteer with La Soupe in Cincinnati, Ohio. La Soupe is helping to build and activate just such a "village" of compassionate people from the local area around the goal of producing food from discarded produce and providing it to families in need.

According to La Soupe's CEO, Suzy DeYoung, the organization's central mission is to "rescue, transform, and share." First, volunteers with La Soupe visit grocery stores and farms to pick up produce that was going to be discarded and "rescue" it for use in the soups that the team creates. That produce is then "transformed" into healthy, delicious food by the chefs at La Soupe. Finally, the food is "shared" with those in the local community who need it.
