These Portraits Of Fallen Heroes Are Healing Hearts
** OGTV's second MILITARY MATTERS playlist story of the week is about the generosity of a Vietnam veteran who uses his artistic skills to create portraits of fallen heroes and then donates them to their families. **
There may be no right answer on how to grieve a loved one, but Michael G. Reagan and George W. Bush have found ways to help.
George W. Bush honors veterans by painting their portraits in new book
Former president George W. Bush's new book features his paintings of inspiring military veterans along with their stories of perseverance.
Michael Reagan is a portrait artist and a Vietnam veteran. 13 years ago he started drawing portraits of the fallen heroes from the war against terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan and has been healing hearts ever since.
After coming back from the Vietnam war, Michael decided to go to art school. At the same time, he was involved with drawing celebrities' portraits at a dinner theatre in Seattle until it went out of business.
After it closed, celebrities still contacted him for portraits. While Michael was drawing the portraits, he would get them to autograph blank illustration boards, which he'd later redraw their portraits on, sell, and donate the money to different charities around the country.
Fun fact: Michael has even drawn the portraits of President Ronald Reagan and President Bush and his first lady!
A year later, his story and portraits wound up on NBC News. One unlikely call from a grateful widow who received a portrait of her late husband, confirmed Michael's decision to draw portraits of fallen heroes, free of charge to anyone who needs them. Realizing what his drawings could do for the families of the fallen, Michael decided he would do them all. "How are we going to pay for that?", he recalled his wife asking him. "We're going to turn that over to God," he replied.
Michael is doing great work for the families of fallen heroes! His gratification comes directly from knowing what his work means to them. "The pictures are helping their hearts heal."
