Teacher Takes Away This Luxury In Lesson About Freedom & Veterans
In 2006, Martha Cothren was named "Teacher of the Year" by Veterans of Foreign Wars for a very good reason. On the first day of school her students walked in to find there were no desks in their classroom at Robinson High School in Little Rock, AR. When they asked where the desks were, Martha let them know they couldn't have them until they earned them. At the end of the day the students were shocked when they saw 27 veterans walk into the classroom, each carrying a desk. She explained to her students, “You don’t have to earn those desks. These guys did it for you. They put them out there for you, but it’s up to you to sit here responsibly to learn, to be good students and good citizens, because they paid a price for you to have that desk, and don’t ever forget it.” After learning this powerful lesson, Martha and her students send care packages to U.S military every year.
