Superstar Smiles

"Put a smile on your face, make the world a better place!" Do you remember the catchy tune that accompanies those lyrics? The one hit wonder Vitamin C sung that song I remember being overplayed, but also brings back many memories that put a smile on face. Why did this song come to my mind? Because the month of May is National Smile Month!

And there isn’t a better way to smile than to take a look at some very famous smiles from past to present. Whether it’s in artwork, an actor, our President, or a cartoon, smiles are contagious, so let’s get smiling!

1.  A notorious and well-known smile seems to be a smirk that doesn’t show any teeth. Her creator,       Leonardo da Vinci, painted her back in the early 1500s. That’s right; I’m talking about the Mona Lisa.

  2.  Another all too familiar smile comes to us from a little girl with dimples and ringlets for hair. For her role in “Little Miss Broadway” back in 1938, she sang a favorite tune of mine: “Be optimistic! Don’t be a grumpy! When the road gets bumpy, just smile!” Are you smiling yet?

  3.  Next up we have A.A. Milne’s honey-loving character, Winnie the Pooh. He may be a simple bear with simple pleasures, but his smile when he’s spending time with his friends is sure to turn any frown upside down.

  4.  A smiley face that captured American hearts belonged to the famous Farrah Fawcett (1947-2009). Farrah’s multiple television and movie roles, including being a “Charlie’s Angel,” brought her sparkling personality and smile to many screens.

  5.  A heartthrob for all ages, George Clooney, has a face and smile some of us just can’t get enough of. With many big and small screen roles, Mr. Clooney can make any woman weak in the knees with his sexy smile.

  6.  An Academy Award winning acceptance that’s sure to bring tears to your eyes comes from Halle Berry. Her genuine smile and gratitude shines through whether she’s accepting a great award or spending time with her daughter.

  7.  And, of course, we can’t forget that smile that seems to spread from ear-to-ear, our current President, Barack Obama. Whether he’s giving a speech or spending quality time with his family, you simply can’t miss President Obama’s giant grin.

Whose smile makes you smile? This May, try smiling a little more often, and like Shirley Temple says, “when the road gets bumpy, just smile!”

The flickering neon sign reflects eerily off the aging, chrome exterior; a long smooth marble counter with spinning stools draws your gaze left and right as you enter; the checkered linoleum floor seeps under the rows of back-to-back leather booths enveloped by the rain streaked wrap-around windows. You may think you've entered a typical American roadside eatery, but your experience here will be anything but ordinary.

You have just stepped into the Bendix Diner, a staple in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey since the 1940's. It's no surprise that The Bendix can serve up a sizzling Burger with deep fried onion rings and a frothy chocolate shake. What is unique about this meal is the waiter who delivers it to your table – his name is John Diakakis, and he is blind.
