Students Live Rent-Free In Return For Companionship At Nursing Home
I am in love with this concept. The Humanitas retirement home in Deventer, Netherland lets students live there, rent-free, in exchange for spending time with the elderly residents. Students are given small, rent-free apartments and required to spent at least 30 hours per month acting as 'good neighbors' to the elderly residents. This project is aimed at warding off the negative effects of aging.
The resident students do a variety of activities with the older residents. Whether it is watching sports or something as important as spending time with them when they get sick, this companionship helps ward off feelings of loneliness. Right now, there are six students living among the 160 seniors at the home. This is a win, win for everyone involved. More nursing homes should jump on board with this companionship program!
