Get Your Heart Purring With This Sweet Story About a Special Cat Café

We love stories that include a "win-win" scenario—and this is definitely one of those!

Sandra Cagan was a businesswoman in Orlando approaching her 50th birthday when she decided to combine her love of cats and her work experience to start a new venture, the Orlando Cat Café.

As a lifelong cat fan, Sandra's main goal in opening the café was to help match kitties up for adoption with pet parents looking for a new friend. What she didn't realize at the time was that her coffee shop would help human visitors as much as the cats!

"The most wonderful thing is the therapy... They always have new cats who need socialization, so everybody wins!" says one regular guest named Laurie. She, like many other cat lovers, can't have pets at home because of allergies in the family. But thanks to the Orlando Cat Café, Laurie gets to experience the therapeutic benefits of cuddly animals whenever she likes.

Plus, Sandra's cat-adoption efforts aren't the only charitable initiative happening at the café! The coffee and food on sale for visitors are made by Axum Coffee, a company that was also started to help others. Axum's namesake is a city in Ethiopia where fresh water is scarce and poverty widespread; all profits from coffee and food sold at the cat café go to the people of Axum, Ethiopia, to help improve their quality of life.

"They have a similar mission in life... we clicked immediately," says Sandra of her business partners.

Speaking of "clicking," maybe the next time you're in Orlando you'll seek out Sandra's café and hit it off with one of the cats up for adoption! Adoption specialists are always on-site to help match the personalities of potential owners with those of the kitties in the play area. And it works! More than 80 cats have been adopted since Sandra opened her business in 2016.

If you are in the area, The Cat Café is located in the Town Center at Cagan Crossings, 4 miles west of Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Black Girl Geek Magic - She's Blazing The Trail For All Like Her

Her family's love of good stories, whether they were comics, anime, video games or even the Harry Potter Books, were all a key part of shaping the "geek" in Jamila Rowser's personality while traveling the world as a military brat with her Air Force mother.

That mix of creativity and imagination that often makes it difficult to fit into new situations was the spark for her popular Girl Gone Geek blog, the root from which all of her other creations have sprouted. "I wanted to write about something I was really passionate about, which was geek culture," Jamila shares. "That one is always going to hold a special place in my heart."
