Oreo, The 8-Week-Old Dalmatian Puppy, Wants To Teach You About Fire Safety
"Every time we go to a school to talk to kids, the first thing they ask is 'Where's the dog?'" says Bardstown, Kentucky Fire Department Chief Billy Mattingly.
For a long time, there was no dog in Chief Mattingly's department. But after hearing that question over and over, and noticing a dip in morale among his firefighters, the Chief decided it was time to recruit a four-legged member to join his team.
The Bardstown Fire Department brought Oreo onboard when the pup was just 8 weeks old, and not quite ready to be the public face of the organization. But soon enough, that's exactly the role that Chief Mattingly wants Oreo to play: the community's dog.
"She's going to stand out," because of her unique spot pattern and her incredibly sweet half-black half-white face, "and that's what we want," the Chief says.
Come the fall, Oreo will start making visits to schools to help the department educate kids about fire safety.
