One Special Pony Helps Teenager Overcome Anxiety
Jennie Brooker and her daughter Jess Spooner had no idea how their lives would be changed after meeting a special pony. Smartie was rescued by Redwings Horse Sanctuary and the RSPCA from a farm in Wales in 2009.
Smartie is an incredible animal. His sweet, gentle and charming nature made him the perfect candidate for their rehoming program. When Jennie and Jess met the pony, they knew they had to bring him home with them.
At the same time he joined the family, Jess, now 16, was suffering from severe anxiety. It got so bad that she had to be admitted to a hospital. This of course helped, but the real life changer was her relationship with Smartie. After spending time with him, Jess was able to overcome her anxiety and rebuild her confidence. Smartie's loving demeanous was a stable and calming influence for Jess. She was able to be discharged and go back to school after just 12 months.
Jess has completed her GCSEs and has her sights set on a career as a veterinary surgeon. The special friendship of Smartie and Jess has also inspired Jennie to set up her own animal therapy business with the aim to help others overcome challenges with anxiety.
“We are so proud of Smartie,” commented Education and Campaigns Officer Andie Vilela. “Through our rehoming programme we hope to give our rescue horses a second chance at a happy and fulfilling life, so it is so lovely to see that Smartie has also given Jess a new lease of life too. We wish Jess every success with her continued studies and Jennie with her new business venture!“
