National Sibling Day: A Family Portrait
National Sibling Day is April 11! The Mahat siblings, a sister and two brothers, haven't had the easiest lives but thanks to the strong bond they share, they continue to live each day with a smile.
The Mahat family moved from a refuge camp in Nepal to Beaverton, Oregon in the fall of 2011. Bishnu, 23, Tara,19, and Rewath, 10, live together with their parents who speak very little English. Originally from Bhutan, the Mahats were driven out of their homes and into Jhapa, Nepal, where Rewath, the youngest, was born. They are still waiting for their last sibling, Nita, to make the long trip to Beaverton with her newborn daughter and husband. They are expecting her arrival this summer.
Bishu is the bread winner of the family and works at a window blinds factory. She has a beautiful laugh and sense of humor. Tara is a Sophomore at Sunset High School, takes classes at PCC to get ready for college and just got his first cell phone. Rewath is bright, a born star and loves Tom and Jerry cartoons. He is constantly entertaining and impressing those around him with his dancing, singing and attitude.
