Mama Dog Carries Her Adopted Possums Around On Her Back
Love knows know boundaries. For a lot mothers, their motherly instinct doesn't either. Tragedy struck a group of helpless baby opossums in Brazil when their mother was attacked and killed. Fortunately, someone discovered the orphaned offspring and handed them over to pet behaviorist, Stephanie Maldonado. She took it upon herself to keep them alive after a nearby wildlife rescue group said they were “too full” to accept newcomers. The animals required feeding every two hours, but it was still uncertain if the opossums would survive without more motherly attention.
Enter Pretinha, Maldonado’s dog, who felt a new maternal calling to the orphaned bunch. Along with nursing and cuddling them, Pretinha is more than happy to embrace her adopted litter's instinct to climb atop their mom, taking them on rides during her walks, just like a real opossum mother.
"It's very nice to see all the care that she has with them, licking them all the time and nestling them," Maldonado wrote on Facebook. When the time comes, Maldonado hopes the opossums can be returned to the wild. Until then, let’s just appreciate some mother dog/baby opossum bonding time!
