Leopard Cub Adopts The Day-Old Baby Of Her Prey
After her first kill, a 2-year-old leopard cub made a startling discovery in the fur of her prey--an adult, female baboon. As she dragged her felled prey to a tree, a day-old baby rolled out of his mother's lap. The young leopard seemed to almost forget about her prey and turned her undivided attention to the newly orphaned baby crawling precariously on the edge of a tree branch.
In what was probably a clash of instincts, the leopard snatched up the baby baboon and brought it to safety, even protecting it from a scavenging hyena. Rather than supplement her meal with another kill, the leopard took him in as her own, and, in the words of The Daily Mail, "[rewrote] the law of the jungle."
