Join in the Joy of This Teacher's Emotional Surprise From His Students
Jeff Baxter has been a teacher for a generation. In 29 years of instructing high schoolers in the Language Arts, Mr. Baxter became a beloved fixture in his Kansas school and community.
While sometimes the enormous effort of teachers feels like it goes unnoticed, Mr. Baxter's school and his students wanted to make sure that he knew how much it meant to all of them, so they took an amazing step to recognize him: nominating him to the National Teachers Hall of Fame. And he was accepted! The Hall of Fame announces 5 new members each year, and this year Mr. Baxter was one of them.
The long-time instructor says that his ambition has always been to grow and improve alongside his students, "in every class that I teach... to get better at what I do. Because," he said in his acceptance speech in the school auditorium, "it's what lifts up students."
A senior at the school spoke about what Mr. Baxter's classes had meant to her, and how his unique teaching style had instilled in her "the importance of communication" and "the power of asking questions."
The best teachers are those who help us become more capable and more curious, all at the same time. Congratulations, Mr. Baxter!
