Farm Becomes Sanctuary for Animals After Tragedy
** Watch this OGTV "GOOD STORY" about a farm in Texas that was flooded during Hurricane Harvey. Somehow the animals found a way to survive and have inspired the owners to convert the farm into a rescue sanctuary. **
The impetus for the creation of the Ima Survivor Animal Sanctuary was the awful week in August 2017 when Hurricane Harvey meandered about southeast Texas unleashing biblical amounts of rain and wreaking havoc on the people and animals who lived there. The survival of a donkey named Ima Jean from 6 foot flood waters, her struggle to live and the fight to survive by her and the other animals from Lester Morrow's ranch is the inspiration for this unique habitat.
The 100 acre Rocking M Ranch is nestled quietly in the beautiful city of Plum Grove, Texas. It is bordered by the mighty San Jacinto River to the west and has a variety of ponds, creeks and open grasslands. Miraculously, the ranch was able to ride out Hurricane Harvey relatively unscathed. What Lester and the other residents of Plum Grove did not know was that the San Jacinto River Authority was forced to open its floodgates to release pressure on its levees and dams to prevent a potential breech. With absolutely no warning, flood waters began to occupy all of the structure and dry space normally grazed by a wide variety of farm animals, and the Morrow family had no choice but to release all the pets and livestock, provide provisions as best as they could, give quick hugs and kisses, say a prayer, and evacuate their family to higher ground.
They received pictures and videos of their home, inundated by 6 feet of water with absolutely no dry land in sight. For three days they mourned the loss of their animal family. But on the day of their return, among all the horror of lost barns, destroyed homes and many deceased animals, a miracle emerged! There was life on the ranch.
"These guys mean the world to me," Lester shared. "The miracle of that day was how these animals survived. That was the beginning of what we do now."
Jami Walker and other volunteers saw the stories of devastation and jumped in to help with the recovery efforts. Hear and see how Lester's ranch got back on its feet thanks to the generosity and spirit of Jami and others who pitched in. Now, two years later, they have turned tragedy into triumph and the ranch has become a sanctuary for the rescue and care of all types of animals. Keep an eye out for a new bunch of stars from this "survivor tale" including Bucky the Horse, Annie the Alpaca, Petunia Pig, Big Tex the Longhorn bull, and of course, Ima Jean!

Using Music and Art to Build Friendships on the Border
** OGTV celebrates World Art Day with a heartwarming story about a small town on the US-Mexico border where a teacher shares her love of music and art to help bring kids and communities together. **
In a small, brightly decorated building only a stone's throw from the border wall between Mexico and the USA, 50 to 100 children a week come to do hands-on art projects, learn a musical instrument, or just socialize with others. In this special place, Director Gretchen Baer's mission is to show kids that anything is possible if you think creatively, no matter who you are or where you came from.
Nonprofit Studio Mariposa is a free transformative art center for kids in Naco, Mexico, along the Arizona border. For the past three years, kids come to the small studio once a week where Gretchen and her volunteers set up art projects and music lessons. The art projects include painting, making bracelets, mosaics and weaving on a loom.
"I chose the name Mariposa, which means butterfly," Gretchen explains, "because I believe the kids are like butterflies, and they just need to have art and creativity to have wings and fly." Funding comes from individuals who want to make a difference and a scrappy band of volunteers that not only donate their time but search out and gather free materials that make the next art project possible. According to the volunteers, the kids light up when they arrive at the studio, and most kids return after the first visit.
Over the past year Studio Mariposa has grown to become home of the Mariposa Band. Gretchen wanted to give the children an opportunity to learn how to play different musical instruments and create original music. Now, musicians from the USA cross the border twice a week to play and teach music. This adds a big boost to the creative development of these children because most kids in Naco come from struggling families, who would never be able to afford music lessons.
Studio Mariposa's message is that children and adults from different countries can create harmony and find meaning through the magic of music and art. Watch and see how Gretchen's years of living in Mexico and being part of the community helped shape her vision for this safe place where art, music and friendship are teaching kids to soar.

Helping the “Unhoused” One Shower At A Time
** Watch this OGTV "GOOD STORY" about a woman in San Francisco who figured out a way to repurpose out-of-service buses into showers that provide this critical service to the Unhoused. **
What is universally despised in large, modern, metropolitan areas more than its public transportation, and in particular, the city bus? Slow, crowded, unpleasant – it mostly reminds us of lean times of struggle. However, a creative group of folks from San Francisco have come up with a brilliant idea that repurposes this inner city workhorse, converting it from a people mover to a mobile oasis where unhoused neighbors can seek comfort.
This initiative is called Lava Mae, and it is based on the concept of Radical Hospitality – bringing critical services to the street where people experiencing homelessness need them most. Founded by Doniece Sandoval in 2013, Lava Mae began by converting public transportation buses into showers and toilets on wheels to deliver hygiene and rekindle dignity for their unhoused neighbors in San Francisco.
Inspired by the plight of evicted neighbors who had no shelter to go to, Doniece developed a proposal to create this unique solution and started fundraising. Her crowdfunding program raised $75,000 which paid to retrofit their first bus, and she was able to harness the power of big brands like Unilever and Google to raise awareness globally. "When you are really trying to serve people, the ultimate act of care and compassion is to take the service to where people are, and for us, our guests are on the streets," she explained. "Through our partners, we get the word out and word on the street just spreads like crazy."
Since inception, Lava Mae has delivered 67,000+ showers to 17,000+ guests, expanded to Los Angeles and Oakland, and innovated one-stop Pop-Up Care Villages to dramatically improve access to essential services for people living on the streets.
Soon Lava Mae will be announcing their plans to ignite a Radical Hospitality revolution globally. Watch and learn how they will be teaching communities around the world how to bring mobile hygiene with privacy and dignity, Radical Hospitality, and restored hope to their unhoused neighbors.

Autistic Adults Thrive At Florida Car Wash
** OGTV celebrates National Car Care Month with this inspiring story about a Florida Car Wash that hires autistic adults and gives them a chance to have a meaningful job and a feeling of success and independence. **
Lots of entrepreneurs build businesses around their personal skill sets. The D'Eri family decided to build their company around a very specific type of talent and ability: those possessed by people on the Autism spectrum, including Andrew D'Eri, one of the family's two sons.
Tom D'Eri, Andrew's brother, explains how the family business came to be: "We saw the skill sets that we thought Andrew had, and then we did broader research around what people with Autism are typically good at."
Tom and his father John found two complementary piece of information in their research. First, that a large percentage of people on the Autism spectrum excel at process-driven tasks and are highly detail-oriented. And second, that 80 to 90% of people living with Autism struggle to find employment. This inspired Tom and John to design a business around the skill sets that Andrew naturally possessed, and to look to employ as many people on the spectrum as possible. And that's how Rising Tide Car Wash was born.
The D'Eri's experiment has worked, perhaps even better than they could have expected. According to Tom, Rising Tide employees are dedicated, thorough, and most importantly, happy and enthusiastic every day.
Kevin Wolyniec, Rising Tide's General Manager, loves that positivity. "The greatest thing about work," he explains, "is that it's really not work," because he spends the day with 35+ employees who love having a job and doing what they do. "It's like a family," Wolyniec says.
We love the way that the D'Eri family set out to give meaning and purpose to one person's life—their son—and ended up helping dozens of others!
