Girl Forfeits Win, Beating Personal Record To Help Fellow Runner
This is a show of good sportsmanship if I've ever seen one. Winning your track meet can be very important to middle school athletes. After all, they work hard training and practicing. A win is proof of their hard work.
Sometimes, there are more important things than winning though. When Makenna Finnegan was half way through her cross country meet, and on track to beat her own personal record, she saw an opponent struggling in pain. She stopped and asked what was wrong. The girl replied, "bad cramps." Without hesitation, or a second thought to winning the face, Makenna stopped to help. She grabbed her opponents hand and they finished the race together.
“Her nature is very caring so I was not surprised at all,” Steve Clark, coach of the Shelby Middle School team told Good News Network.
While some athletes are very competitive, it's times like this and students like Makenna that prove what really matters!
