First Generation College Students Succeed at Georgetown University

Many young people find new communities to join on their college campuses. Sports teams, clubs, fraternities and sororities, dorms, and more organizations offer structure and shared experiences that bond students together. But not all of those students have the same level of need for community, for support from a new "family" on campus. For a variety of reasons, freshmen who come from low-income backgrounds or who are the first in their families to attend college frequently encounter greater hurdles to assimilating. At Georgetown University, school leaders have made it a point to direct resources and assistance to just those students.

The Georgetown Scholarship Program, known as GSP, is the university's powerful response to the challenges that low-income and first-generation students face. Seeking to provide "a home away from home," GSP provides support not only financially, but emotionally as well. The program even includes alumni volunteers and mentors who help guide students through the myriad new experiences that college offers.

And the program is working—in a big way. GSP students are graduating at a 96.4% rate!

Emily and Adrian both attend Georgetown as part of the GSP. In the video above, these two students share their stories of growing up dreaming of college, their experiences choosing and applying to schools, and how GSP is helping them navigate their Georgetown experiences.

"The love is endless. Everyone wants to see you succeed," Adrian says of the GSP community. The program has changed Emily's life as well: "A lot of students would think of GSP as their second family, but I think of it as my first family." These two are not afraid to hide their ambition, and they certainly don't take being at school for granted.
