First-Ever Dog Show For Rescues Honors Sweet Senior Lab With Top Prize

Rescue dogs have lots of fervent supporters among animal lovers, who encourage people looking for pets to "adopt, don't shop." And now, rescue pups have their own awards show!

The first-ever American Rescue Dog Show, a Westminster-style competition for shelter dogs, took place recently; as this video shows, it was a joyous event for both owners and their beloved dogs alike. And the story of the ultimate winner of the show points to even more reasons to "adopt, don't shop."

Jackie, the black Lab mix who took Best in Show at the competition, is 11 years old, putting her very much in the senior dog category. Senior dogs in shelters face especially tough odds of getting adopted, as many pet parents are looking for puppies. Jackie was actually scheduled to be euthanized at her shelter, just hours after her forever mom Debbie Bloom stopped in the shelter and fell in love with Jackie.

"Since she has arrived," Debbie says of Jackie, "she has rarely left my side. It sounds cheesy, but her favorite thing to do is to sit and stare into your eyes. It's like she just wants to connect."

Well, Jackie certainly connected with the judges at the American Rescue Dog Show. You can watch Debbie and Jackie accept the award for Jackie's big win in the sweet video above. Go Jackie!
