Famous Musicians Help At-Risk Students Choose 'Guitars Over Guns'
When you think of Miami, Florida you think fun in the sun, beaches and glamour. But that's not the life for the residents of Miami-Dade County. It's heartbreaking that almost one of every three of those residents living in poverty is under 18. The schools there face higher than normal drop-out rates, no after-school programs and more students are failing out. Musician Chad Bernstein is trying to help turn these kids' lives around through his non-profit, Guitars Over Guns.
The non-profit pairs middle-school students with professional musicians, free instrument instruction and mentoring. Since 2008, Guitars Over Guns has worked with more than 225 students in Miami-Dade County. He says his group has seen more than a 90% increase in academic performance and school attendance of students in the program, according to CNN. You will see in the video above that these kids are actually given the opportunity to perform on stage. This program not only gives them a friend and someone to look up to, but they actually learn a new skill and are given the chance to fall in love with music.
