Dreidel Spinning Kids Can Now Have Major League Dreams

Now that the NBA's Nets have ended a long drought and brought major league sports back to Brooklyn, will other sports leagues follow? A new sport is making a push to fill the breach in this New York City borough. and what it lacks in notoriety it makes up for in originality... Welcome to Major League Dreidel!

To be a big time dreidel spinner you don't have to celebrate Hanukkah, you don't even need to be Jewish. You just need a supple wrist, a thirst for competition (and a strong beverage), and a catchy nickname.

Eric Pavoney, the self described "Knishiner" of Major League Dreidel, has worked up a pretty good "spiel" of how this organization is on the cusp of creating a league of professional dreidel spinners. "It has taken upon itself to take a traditional child's gambling game and turn it into a professional sport," he remarked. The world's first Dreidel Championship took place in Brooklyn and featured such notable dreidel stars as Spin-Credible Hulk, Dr. Dre-idle, and Spin-Diana Jones.

With this kind of enthusiasm, the dreidel could soon become much more than just another holiday tchatchke!

Farm Becomes Sanctuary for Animals After Tragedy

The impetus for the creation of the Ima Survivor Animal Sanctuary was the awful week in August 2017 when Hurricane Harvey meandered about southeast Texas unleashing biblical amounts of rain and wreaking havoc on the people and animals who lived there. The survival of a donkey named Ima Jean from 6 foot flood waters, her struggle to live and the fight to survive by her and the other animals from Lester Morrow's ranch is the inspiration for this unique habitat.

Using Music and Art to Build Friendships on the Border

In a small, brightly decorated building only a stone's throw from the border wall between Mexico and the USA, 50 to 100 children a week come to do hands-on art projects, learn a musical instrument, or just socialize with others. In this special place, Director Gretchen Baer's mission is to show kids that anything is possible if you think creatively, no matter who you are or where you came from.

Nonprofit Studio Mariposa is a free transformative art center for kids in Naco, Mexico, along the Arizona border. For the past three years, kids come to the small studio once a week where Gretchen and her volunteers set up art projects and music lessons. The art projects include painting, making bracelets, mosaics and weaving on a loom.
