Dad Builds Dream Playground For Late Special Needs Son
A playground is a place where children can play and have fun -- but what about children with disabilities? Shane's Inspiration created an answer by building inclusive playgrounds for kids with disabilities. Co-founded by Scott Williams, a father whose son was told he would live his life in a wheelchair after being diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, lives the mission of Shane's Inspiration -- to make sure everyone is able to play in a positive environment.
When Nicte and her family found Shane's Inspiration, they started participating in monthly "play dates," allowing her two daughters to play in a judgement-free environment. Visiting the Shane's Inspiration playgrounds with peers with challenges also helped Lourdes and Diana to open up, both physically and verbally. Shane's Inspiration has opened a gate for them so that they have the same chances as other families and kids.
Shane's Inspiration is an international non-profit organization with projects opened throughout the US as well as in Mexico, Canada, Ecuador, Russia, and Israel. Their Inclusion Lunchbox Education Program has been ordered in 30 countries throughout the world. There are currently 75 projects in development across the United States, as well as in communities throughout the world. The cost of Shane's Inspiration playgrounds in LA average $600,000. Depending on the community, Shane's Inspiration receives donations from municipalities, foundations, corporations, families and individual donors.
