Craving a Good Movie? "The Hunger Games" Hits the Spot.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have probably heard about the much anticipated movie, “The Hunger Games”. Premiering Friday March 23, “The Hunger Games” is yet another book series turned movie with a huge cult following. Lionsgate studio has spent $45 million on marketing and promotional efforts for the film and it is expected to gross $100 million opening weekend, making it the biggest film debut of the year. Before you stop reading this and start condemning modern cinema, give “The Hunger Games” a chance. Sure, it’s not solving world peace or teaching you Latin word origins but it does offer one thing we could always use more of in our lives—FUN!

Nothing is more fun than a trip to the movies! Now, I am actually a fan of going to the movies alone (better seat choices and guaranteed uninterrupted screen time), but there is no reason your friends, family, boyfriend, coworkers can’t come with you to see this one! “The Hunger Games” is the type of movie that literally has something for everyone.

Right now you are probably thinking to yourself, “Me? See The Hunger Games? Not in a million years.” Time to quell all your doubts and prove “The Hunger Games” is a must-see for everyone… Yes, even you!

          You Will Love “The Hunger Games” If You Are a…..

Thrill seeker: Don’t let the teenage ‘Hunger Games’ fanatics fool you; this movie is not for the faint of heart. It is filled with non-stop action and fight scenes. The movie centers around 24 teenagers competing in an on-camera battle to the death with only 1 survivor. The challengers must scheme, trick and out fight their opponents to win. Setting itself apart from fantasy movies like “Twilight” and “Harry Potter”, the majority of fight scenes in the Hunger Games takes place in a simple outdoor arena. You get the beautiful wilderness landscapes without all the werewolves and vampires—sounds like a win to me!

Romantic: Deep down, everyone loves a good romance and this love triangle does not disappoint. Unlike your typical love story, this romance is driven by strong female lead, Katniss Everdeen, who has the heart of two young suitors, Gale and Peeta, in the palm of her hand. While fans are still swearing oaths to “Team Gale” or “Team Peeta”, this romance is more mature than most seen in theaters recently. The movie highlights the fact that Katniss has much more to worry about in her life than her next boyfriend. Katniss has to worry about providing for her family and saving herself in the Hunger Games arena. The romance is refreshingly honest, taking politics, family loyalties and overall survival into account rather than just falling back on a lovey-dovey plot.

IMAX fan: Fans of IMAX better waste no time because “The Hunger Games” is only in IMAX theaters for one week! Fashionista: War may be ugly but it can still be fashionable! “The Hunger Games” is a practical on-screen runway—think Gladiator meets Fashion Week. “The Hunger Games” costume designers swore to keep all the over-the-top ensembles as true to book description as possible—even Katniss’ unforgettable flaming (yes, literally) red dress. Entertainment Know-it-all: If you love being “in the know” on Hollywood and movies, you will love “The Hunger Games”. While most blockbusters play it safe by casting big screen superstars, “The Hunger Games” has picked a whole new cast of exciting up-and-comers. While there is a good chance for all of the young starlets’ careers to explode, the standout performance is rumored to come from Jennifer Lawrence, who plays the female lead. Lawrence has not come out of complete obscurity, having scored an Oscar nomination for her role in “Winter’s Bone”, but as a newcomer she still beat out an impressive list of actresses, including Hailee Steinfeld and Emma Roberts, for the role of Katniss.

Music Buff: Lionsgate pulled out all the stops on this soundtrack and brought in a cast of A-List musicians including: Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, Kid Cudi, The Decemberists, and the Civil Wars. The soundtrack is heavily dosed with alternative-rock sounds influenced by the local Appalachian landscape where the movie was shot. On top of that, no one can resist an irresistibly catchy Taylor Swift love song; even though Swift claims fans will see a darker, brooding side of her on the soundtrack thanks to hours spent channeling Katniss’ heroine character.

In the spirit of Hunger Games competition, I challenge you to think of a reason NOT to go see this movie! Don’t worry, losing this battle won’t result in death—just a $13 ticket and a fun-filled movie night! As the ‘Hunger Games’ motto goes; May the odds be in your favor!
