'Cookie Lady' Gets New Roof From Local Firefighters
A lady from Regina, Canada was surprised when a group of firefighters she knew showed up at her house to re-shingle her roof.
Diane Duke had brought fresh baked cookies to the local firefighters every week for 12 years up until recently. Her husband, Lorne, had fallen ill in 2013 and she decided to dedicate more time to helping him.
"It was hard to say goodbye to them," Duke said. "I couldn't even say goodbye actually. I walked in that day, said I'm finished ... and I walked out crying."
The firefighters heard of Duke's husband's illness a bit after and also heard that they needed a new roof on their home. Materials were donated by Dynamic Roofing and Kenroc and the firefighters spent two hours re-shingling the house.
"All I can say is that for us to give back to her is nothing," Chris Prohar, one of the firefighters, said. "For us to give her a day when she gave us so many days in [all the] years."
Duke said that she was moved and overwhelmed by the gesture. Now that her husband is improving, she said that she wants to return to the routine of bringing them cookies again.
