Community Raises Money To Buy Bullet Proof Vests For Police Dogs
Officers wear bullet proof vests, so why not their K-9 partners? After a police dog from Canton Police Department in Ohio lost its life during a recent burglary, the community stepped in. A pet blogger, Beth Philley, heard the extremely sad news about K-9 Jethro and wanted to do something to honor the brave dog.
Beth created a GoFundMe page to raise money for new bulletproof vests for the department's police dogs. People fell in love with K-9 Jethro and quickly donated over $30,600 in just three days. Losing one of its own is devastating, but the public's support has helped them through this rough time.
"We are blown away by all the support," Officer Eric Stanbro, head K9 trainer told The Huffington Post. "The police department didn't even set any of the funds up. Regular folks did that and we have been floored by the outpouring of donations."
With the community's help, the department's seven dogs will receive new bulletproof vests. A funeral will be held for Jethro on Thursday, honoring a dog that made his department proud.
"We believe, and our chief has even said that he believes that Jethro saved officers that day,” Stanbro told Fox 8.
