'Circle Of Care' Changes View Of Pediatric Cancer With Photo Art Exhibit

** OGTV is recognizing Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with this story about a startling photo exhibit that is highlighting the spirit and hope of these patients and families. **

Photo art and two determined, loving moms are changing the views of pediatric cancer. After Liz Salguero and Dawn Ladenheim met in a support group for moms and siblings of children with cancer, Circle of Care was born. Circle of Care, which is a Wilton, Connecticut nonprofit organization, provides emotional and financial assistance to families who have children who have been diagnosed with cancer.

As with many of their special projects, Life Within The Journey, is a revealing photo art exhibit that is changing the lives of cancer patients and their families. This breathtaking photo exhibit, developed by Jeff Salguero, features 22 pediatric cancer patients aim to change the view of childhood cancer. The goal of the traveling exhibit is to invite everyone to see the other side of a cancer diagnosis: the bravery, the spirit, the hope and to celebrate families who have endured so much.

The photographer, Jeanna Shepard, does a beautiful job highlighting each child's personality and bringing inspiration to all who see it. Accompanying text, written by Christine Baer, tells the powerful story of each child's journey. These heroic children are patients of the Smilow Cancer Center at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. The exhibit is also on display on the pediatric oncology unit of the Smilow Center where you can view it at any time!

Life Within The Journey has been on exhibit in 8 towns throughout Connecticut including the State Capital which was sponsored by CT State Senator, Ted Kennedy Jr., himself a pediatric cancer survivor who said, “Circle of Care's powerful exhibit, “Life Within the Journey" reveals the other side of pediatric cancer; the side where life - in all its beautiful and complex detail – marches on." Today, we invite you to view these inspirational pictures and hear from the families and those who brought this exhibit to life.

** As we wind down to the final days of this difficult year, OGTV is tipping our hat to all of the essential workers on the front lines with this uplifting story about a New Jersey man who has found a way to do this difficult job for years, even without his eyesight! **

The flickering neon sign reflects eerily off the aging, chrome exterior; a long smooth marble counter with spinning stools draws your gaze left and right as you enter; the checkered linoleum floor seeps under the rows of back-to-back leather booths enveloped by the rain streaked wrap-around windows. You may think you've entered a typical American roadside eatery, but your experience here will be anything but ordinary.

You have just stepped into the Bendix Diner, a staple in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey since the 1940's. It's no surprise that The Bendix can serve up a sizzling Burger with deep fried onion rings and a frothy chocolate shake. What is unique about this meal is the waiter who delivers it to your table – his name is John Diakakis, and he is blind.
