Caly On the Good (E7) - Cancer Survivor’s Song and Story Teaches Doctors

We have followed Caly's story from her hospital room, to her moment on Americas's Got Talent, and most recently on her travels to Los Angeles to record and promote her single, "Head Held High". In this episode of Caly On The Good, the young singer will be introduced to a very different type of audience, unlike any she has met before.

This stop of Caly's travels lands her in Boston, Massachusetts, where she will attend the DPharm Conference. This an annual gathering of doctors who have come to listen to cancer patients tell the stories of their hospital experiences and treatment so that they can understand the patient's perspective and become better at providing care.

Joining Caly for this event is her manager for the last two years, Chris Maltese. Although they talk all the time, Chris appreciates the opportunity to spend some one on one time with her. "It's good for me to see her at these events where she is speaking and performing," he remarks. "It gives me a chance to understand where she is in her development."

As part of her appearance at DPharm, Caly is interviewed by Executive Director Valerie Bowling, who is thrilled that Caly agreed to participate. "I was doing research on who would be a great patient advocate with an unusual story," she recalled. "Here I find this young woman, only recently recovered from cancer, who had performed on a national stage, with a beautiful voice…. and I thought, who could be better!"

A key part of the conference are the segments that are part of the "Ask The Patient Program" where the doctors in attendance can meet and listen to patients who have been through clinical trials and want to share what their experiences have been like. Caly's segment with Valerie not only includes her treatment and recovery story, but she also shares her deep, heartfelt feelings about what drives her music and how much she values the opportunities she has now has that seemed so unreachable when she was hooked to machines in a hospital bed just a few years ago.

Watch how Caly emotionally connects to this unique audience with a special rendition of "Head Held High", and inspires them to continue their important work.
