Boy Born Without Limbs Teaches Us The Meaning Of Life
Bowen Toomey is a 5-year-old boy who lives with his two older brothers and his parents. He’s in kindergarten and he enjoys jumping on the trampoline, swimming, reading books and oh yeah, he doesn’t have arms or legs.
Bowen was born in Serbia and was in an orphanage in Belgrade when he was discovered on an adoption website by Jeremy and Devon Toomey. Devon saw Bowen and instantly knew it was her son. After a nine month process, when Bowen was 18 months old, Jeremy and Devon, along with their two sons, made the trip to Belgrade to pick up their new addition to the family. He has been changing their lives ever since.
It was not always easy with Bowen. For his entire life he had been on a diet of hot broth and oatmeal, so Bowen did not know how to chew. He couldn’t move, he didn’t know how to sit up. Now, after various therapies, Bowen is just a normal kid. He can swim on his own, he’s learning how to use prosthetics. His family puts a band around his arm so he can use a spoon to eat. He can do it all!
The Toomey family is a very happy family and everyday they are inspired by Bowen. Devon Toomey has become an advocate for special needs adoption saying, “you can adopt kids with special needs and they thrive just like any other child, they just need the opportunity."
What an inspiring story!
